Terra Blanca Winery
In 1999, Jennifer was asked by Keith Pilgrim of Terra Blanca Winery to design a very large new facility for his quickly expanding winery. Completed in 2001, this building includes a large tasting and retail area, all of their corporate offices, a banquet facility for weddings and other large events, private tasting room, fermentation, bottling and storage areas. There are also a series of underground caves for wine storage and special events. The building takes advantage of its site on a hill in the desert of Red Mountain, in Benton City, WA. It is buried halfway into the hillside in order to maintain low constant temperatures easily in the lower level of the building, where all of the wine production functions are located. Keith is a geologist as well as a vintner, and he chose this site based on the soil and potential for growing great wines. The building is composed physically of a steel structure inside a system of foam and concrete walls, to optimize energy performance.
