In 2006, Venture Bank put out a call to artists for the artwork to be located in their new headquarters building, in Dupont, WA. Jennifer and Shape 3, Inc. were selected to produce this piece, with a $25,000 commission for all design and fabrication. To speak to the bank’s identity as a Pacific Northwest company who related to its customer base of campers, hikers, and other outdoor sportsmen, the piece was envisioned as a place under an awe-inspiring canopy of tall fir trees. Jennifer named the piece ‘Pause’ to encourage passers-by to sit and remember the outdoors.
The piece is completely site- and client-specific, with a working water feature, a Rainier scene on the glass behind the trees, and inlaid slate tile, to blur the line between art and architecture.
